The following is a list of optional supplies to be used by each student. There is no requirement that a parent provide these materials, however the students would make good use of these items.

If students wish to use a 3 ring binder, they may use the same binder for more than one class. I will frequently give students important handouts. Most handouts will be hole-punched so they can be easily placed in a 3 ring binder, but any notebook with pockets will help students stay organized.
Students are required to complete journal assignments each day. These assignments will be collected and graded every nine weeks. Students are encouraged to keep these assignments in a notebook. A small, spiral notebook with holes would best. This type of notebook can be placed in a 3 ring binder and easily removed when journals are collected. If students wish to use a 3 ring binder for notes, class work, and journal entries, dividers separating each section would help keep students organized.

Course Description- This course is the study of English literature including pertinent people and events in English history from the Anglo-Saxon period into the twentieth century. The course incorporates the epic, drama, novel, essay, short story, sonnet, and other forms of poetry. Extensive writing experiences, including research paper, are emphasized. This course is designed to prepare students for college and the workplace after high school graduation.
Grading ScaleA= 90-100B= 80-89C=70-79D=65-69F=Below 65
1st and 3rd Nine Weeks- Daily work including homework, daily tests, recitations, reports, etc. counts 1/4 of the total 9-weeks grade. Weekly tests or chapter tests will count 1/2 of the 9-weeks average. The 9-weeks test will count 1/4 of the 9 weeks average.
2nd and 4th Nine Weeks- Daily work including homework, daily tests, recitations, reports, etc. counts 1/4 of the total 9-weeks grade. Weekly tests or chapter tests will count 1/3 of the 9-weeks average. No 9-weeks test will be given the 2nd and 4th 9- weeks. Semester exams will count 1/5 of the semester average. Most assignments will not be accepted late. When assignments are accepted late, they will be downgraded.
Make Up Work- When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed and to make up the work. I have set up a class website so you can go online to view lesson plans and assignments. This website has been created for your convenience, and it is in your best interest to check this website when you miss class. I will also post assignments for the week on the board every Monday as an additional reminder. This accommodation is for students who do not have access to the internet at home. If assignments are changed or revised, I will correct this on the website and extra time will be given for students to complete missed assignments.
**When large assignments, such as papers or projects, are given specific deadlines weeks or months in advance, they must be turned in on the final due date. Assignments may be submitted in advance. Ten points will be taken off each day the assignment is late.
** Students with excused absences will be given three (3) days to complete make-up work. Students with unexcused absences should turn in work the day they return to school. Please do not miss class unless it is necessary and unavoidable.
Homework- All assignments are to be completed at home and will be collected at the beginning of class.
Journals- Journal assignments will be listed on the board every day. Students are required to begin journal work immediately when they enter the classroom. These assignments will be collected and graded every nine weeks. Students are encouraged to keep these assignments in a notebook.
Cheating- Plagiarizing and cheating are serious offenses. You will receive an “F” for the assignment and face disciplinary action

Classroom Rules/ Procedures 1) Students are expected to report to class on time and immediately begin journal work.2) Students are expected to have all materials for class each day.3) Students are expected to follow school rules and procedures specified in the GHS Student Handbook.4) Students are not to eat or drink in the classroom.5) Students are expected to remain in their seats at all times6) Students are to respect their classmates, their teacher, and themselves. (No talking without permission)7) Students are expected to use the restroom and get water before the tardy bell. (Only 2 bathroom passes per nine weeks)8) Students are expected to leave all electronic devices at home.9) Students are for no reason allowed behind Mrs. Rawson’s desk without permission.10) Students are expected to make up any assignments that were missed during their absence.11) The teacher dismisses the students, not the bell.

This class is designed to prepare students for college and the workplace after high school graduation.
